Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo about 1612/16; died 1667 Mazo was the son-in-law of Velázquez and succeeded him as court painter (Pintor de Cámara) to Philip IV of Spain. Only two signed works by Mazo are known, one of them, 'Queen Mariana in Mourning', is in the Collection. Mazo was born in the province of Cuenca, probably at Beteta.

Del Mazo was the son-in-law of Velázquez. He probably entered the studio of Velazquez in 1630 and married his Master's daughter in 1633. He assisted Velázquez in the production of court portraits, working in a manner close to that of his father-in-law. He served as painter to Prince Balthasar Carlos and succeeded Velazquez as court painter.

This tenebrous and subtly rendered portrait of Philip IV of Spain's Pintor de cámara, Diego de Silva y Velazquez, was painted by the sitter's son-in-law Juan Bautista del Mazo, probably in the early 1650s.For historical reasons the painting can be dated with a great deal of certainty to the years 1644 - 1659, on account of the key that is tucked into Velazquez's belt.
